LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Making history come alive

To the Editor:
I would like to thank you for the kind article in the Herald last week, “New president at historical society.”
I must note, however, that Madeline Pearson will continue as executive director of the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook, and will continue to work as hard as she has for the last 10 years.
The historical society will continue to preserve history and to make it come alive, and Pearson will be an integral part of that pursuit. It will be my pleasure to continue to work with her, the Board of Directors and the public to bring the story of our past, present and future to all concerned.

Profiteers taking over education

To the Editor:
Regarding Scott Brinton’s column “inBloom: corporatizing America’s schools” (May 16-22):
I am happy to see that newspapers are beginning to report on the worst education reform in the nation’s history. inBloom, sadly, is the tip of the iceberg!
Many Long Island parents are attempting to wrestle control of education back from profiteers such as Rupert Murdoch (inBloom), Michelle Rhee (Students First), Bill Gates (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) and many more. We are about five to six years behind in fighting this, but parent groups such as Opt Out L.I., Parents and Teachers Against Common Core and New York Parents Opposed to the Release of Students’ Private Data are rising up in numbers to rid the state of this horrible takeover.
I am the mother of a 10-year-old boy who has had amazing, talented and gifted teachers. I, though, have seen his education go from rich and rounded to test prep. This is not his teachers’ fault, but that of Governor Cuomo, state Education Commissioner John King, Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch and President Obama.
Parents, teachers and journalists have an obligation to expose the truth. I am happy that Brinton has done so. Keep investigating and writing!
