Malverne’s sweet fest kicks off the Lighting

If ever there was a Willy Wonka version of Malverne, the Cookie Decorating Workshop would certainly be it.

More than 150 children — plus their elders — participated in this year’s event, which has been held annually for more than 20 years in the lower level of the Malverne Library. In addition to the cookies, supplied by Malverne Bakery, children decorated their sweet treats with multiple color sprinkles, M&M’s, marshmallow fluff, and other goodies. The event was also attended by past Malverne Mayor, Cathy Hunt, who was the first to organize the event at Our Lady of Lourdes School.

The Cookie Decorating Workshop is the traditional start of the Holiday Lighting season in Malverne, which began Dec. 1 and culminated on Saturday evening with festivities throughout the village. Over 30 holiday events were held in the span of three days: just the thing to get Malverne's festive spirit flowing.
