A patriotic run on the Fourth of July

Posted

The Bellmore Striders running club held its annual Independence Day run this Fourth of July, and hundreds of runners turned out to race while showing their patriotism.

This U.S. Track & Field-sanctioned event included a one-mile youth run for ages 12 and younger and a four-mile run for adults. This year’s race, with a record setting 700 participants, was dedicated to the memory of former Strider Matthew Warkala, who died of brain cancer.

Chris Heibell, 24, of Hillsborough, N.J., placed first in the adult run among the males, and 15-year-old Olivia Ortiz was the first female to cross the finishing line.
