Bellmore Post Office evacuated during bomb scare

Police investigated what they deemed to be a “suspicious package” found outside of the Bellmore Post Office Friday morning, but an investigation revealed that the package was empty.

A call came to police around 9:35 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the department. After having all employees and customers evacuate the building, police closed down a strip of Merrick Road, heading eastbound, and the bomb squad came in to investigate.

“These are the days that you can’t take anything [lightly],” said EMT John Scalesi, who was at the scene of the investigation.

Bellmore-native David White, 33, watched the events from across the street at Creative Glazing, a glass business. He stood with multiple passerbys, but said that he was not worried.

“We’ve got Long Island’s finest here,” White added. “They always take care of it.”

The investigation ended around 11:30 and police reopened traffic after the bag was deemed harmless.
