Bellmore woman attacked by pit bull in N. Merrick

Posted

A Bellmore woman was attacked by pit bulls while at a North Merrick home on Aug. 18 at 5 p.m., according to Nassau County Police.

Police said that the Bellmore woman, 34, was in the backyard of a Bridge Street home when she got into an argument with another woman, 35, over five pit bulls being in the yard. Police said that three of the pit bulls became aggressive and attacked the Bellmore woman, who sustained severe lacerations to her arms, legs, face and back of the head. She was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where she is now listed in stable condition.

The other woman, who was in control of the dogs, attempted to pull the pit bulls off the victim, and sustained an injury to her elbow from a dog bite, according to police. She was also sent to the hospital for treatment.

Emergency service police officers contained three of the dogs in the house, and two dogs that ran from the home were located shortly after. Officers from the Town of Hempstead Animal Control Unit removed the dogs from the house and issued summonses.

Police did not identify either of the women.
