North Bellmore School District’s Committee to Explore Educational Options came to the decision to recommend closing Gunther School Wednesday evening. The announcement came at the committee’s public meeting at Saw Mill School. Following a discussion of which of the six elementary schools made the most sense to close, the 21-member committee put the decision up to a vote. Twelve of the board members voted for closing Gunther as the most viable option.

The North Bellmore School District has five buildings in North Bellmore and takes in Park Avenue Elementary School, which is in North Merrick. The committee will present its findings to the Board of Education in the coming days and weeks. Superintendent Arnold Goldstein stressed that the final decision is up to the board. The board will also host a public hearing for parents and community members to voice their concerns. That hearing will likely take place in early December at which time the board will render a decision.
