H.S. Football: Week 8

Posted

The final week of the regular season is here for Nassau County football teams, and a bunch of playoff berths remain up for grabs, especially in Conference IV where half of the eight spots are unclaimed.

In Conference I, red-hot East Meadow (6-1) aims for a seventh straight victory and possible No. 1 seed in the playoffs when it hosts Hicksville (5-2). Calhoun (4-3), which is trying to hold off Hicksville for the final playoff spot, host Plainview-JFK (3-4). Oceanside (4-3) can punch its playoff ticket with a win at Herricks (1-6).

In Conference II, local rivals Mepham (5-2) and Kennedy (4-3) battle at the home field of the Cougars and the winner could avoid a first-round matchup with undefeated Garden City.

In Conference III, Lynbrook (7-0) goes for an unbeaten regular season when it hosts Plainedge (6-1). The Owls could lose and still earn the top seed based on a large lead over the Red Devils in the power rankings. Hewlett (4-3) looks to secure a first-round home playoff game when defending county champion Bethpage (3-4) visits.

In Conference IV, locals Malverne (3-4), Clarke (3-4) and East Rockaway (3-4) sit on the playoff bubble. Of the three, Malverne sits in the best of shape and is home to Locust Valley (4-3). Clarke heads to Roosevelt (6-1), and the Rocks get Cold Spring Harbor (3-4) at home.

With the exception of Oceanside-Herricks, which kicks off Friday at 7 p.m., all games begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
