With more than 70 percent of election precincts reporting on Tuesday night, it appeared that Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg, a Democrat from Merrick, would cruise to victory over challenger Dr. Fred Jones, a Republican from Merrick. Denenberg had garnered 5,640 votes to Jones’s 2,012.

The race between Legislator Norma Gonsalves, a Republican from East Meadow, and Patricia Maher, a Democrat from East Meadow, was closer, but it appeared that the Conservative Party vote would propel Gonsalves to victory. With 95 percent of precincts reporting, Gonsalves had more than 5,500 votes to Maher’s 4,800. More than 900 of Gonsalves’s votes were on the Conservative line.

In the Town of Hempstead, incumbent Kate Murray, a Republican from Levittown, was the victor in the supervisor’s race, defeating challenger Gary Port, a Democrat from West Hempstead. With almost 70 percent of precincts reporting, Murray had nearly 49,000 votes, more than double Port’s 23,000.

Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla, a Republican from Bellmore, led challenger Stephen Anchin, a Democrat from Hewlett by nearly a 2-to-1 margin. Bonilla had more than 45,000 votes to Anchin’s 25,000.

Town Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin, a Republican from Garden City, beat Wilton Robinson, a Democrat from Roosevelt. Clavin had more than 47,000 votes to Robinson’s nearly 23,000. And it appeared that Town Councilwoman Angie Cullin, a Republican from Freeport, would stave off a challenge by Claudia Borecky, a Democrat from Merrick.
