Inspiring and giving in North Bellmore

It's common these days for school children to bring in toys for donation for children in need, but at Martin Avenue School in North Bellmore, students had the opportunity to learn about the children and circumstances that inspired giving this year.
John Theissen, founder of the notable John Theissen Children's Foundation in Wantagh, came to the school to speak with fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders about his being hospitalized as a teenager for a brain tumor and meeting children in need there, which inspired his quest to help them ever since.
The Martin Avenue students came away with a better sense of the reality of what it is like for children to be hospitalized, ill and alone, particularly during the holidays. .
