A local woman remained in critical condition Monday morning after being struck by a car while walking near John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary last week.

According to authorities, Donna Polimeni, 58, of Bellmore, was struck in a crosswalk on Newbridge Road by Margaret Greco, 49, of Massapequa Park, on Friday morning, Oct. 14.

Greco was exiting the Southern State Parkway at the time, police said, and Greco had not been charged at press time.

Polimeni was transported from the scene to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was treated for a head injury authorities described as non-fatal.

According to Shelley Lotenberg, Director of Public Relations at Nassau University Medical Center, Polimeni remained in the intensive care unit in “critical but stable condition” on Monday.

On Thursday, Lotenberg said Polimeni was moved out of intensive care and into the physical medicine and rehabilitation center. She is in fair condition, according to Lotenberg, and hospital staff are working with her towards recovery.

The accident remains under investigation and any witnesses are asked to call the Nassau County Police, Troop L, at 631-756-3300.

Polimeni serves as a board member for the North Bellmore Foundation for Academic Enrichment and Recreation, a non-profit organization that runs a summer program for students from the surrounding areas entering kindergarten through sixth grade. It donates funds and supports Bellmore school districts, including Dinkelmeyer, through the school year.
