A Mepham High School student was recently recognized in a national competition for her achievements in English.

Junior Jaime Marvin has been selected as a winner in the 2014 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in writing. The award, established in 1957, seeks to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize outstanding writers throughout the nation.

This year, 164 students nationwide were chosen as outstanding writers. Only 20 of those students are from New York, district officials said.

National judges evaluated students’ compositions on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development and style. Judges also looked for writing that demonstrated effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.

Marvin submitted two pieces of writing for this competition –– one themed piece and one piece that represented her best work.
