Mepham’s Key Club hosts a blood drive

Posted

The annual blood drives hosted by Mepham High School’s Key club have become a staple for community service at the school. Students held the most recent one on the morning of Nov. 30.

Tom Mazeika, a Mepham teacher and the Key Club’s adviser, has hosted two blood drives a year for at least a decade. Key Club emphasizes community service, and the blood drives are just a few of the ways its members give back throughout the year.

“It’s giving back in a different way,” Mazeika said, noting that it’s not the type of charitable event that one sees the effects of giving. But he noted, “This is something that could save someone’s life."

By mid-morning, 75 students had signed up to donate blood. The students had to be at least 16 years old and come during one of their free periods. For junior Rodger Borger, it was his first time donating blood; he said he was only a little bit nervous.

Nurses were on hand in case any of the students felt faint, and snacks and drinks were available to increase blood sugar levels. The Mepham Key Club will hold another blood drive in the spring.
