More fast food for the Bellmores?

Arby's submits application to build on Sunrise Highway

Posted

Arby's corporation has submitted an application to build a restaurant on the south side of Sunrise Highway 150 feet east of Bellmore Avenue, Town of Hempstead press secretary Susie Trenkle-Pokalsky said on Thursday. The site is a former Speedy Muffler.

The filing is still in the early stages, and plan examiners from the Town of Hempstead Department of Buildings are looking over Arby's requests. Trenkle-Pokalsky said the proposal would likely be denied and sent to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

On such matters, the Town of Hempstead always "encourages the public to be heard," Trenkle-Pokalsky said. Once the request is moved to the Board of Zoning Appeals, a public hearing date will be set to review the construction plans.

White Castle is planning to build a restaurant at St. Mark's Avenue and Sunrise Highway in Bellmore, about a quarter-mile west of the proposed Arby's. A group of residents calling themselves the Bellmore Preservation Group plans to protest the proposed White Castle at a Feb. 10 Town Board of Zoning Appeals hearing.

Arby's officials could not be reached for comment.
