Nassau County police are asking the public for help in identifying the driver of an SUV that struck and injured a man crossing Bellmore Avenue last Friday night, and then drove off.

The 19-year-old victim was crossing the street in front of the offices of Bellmore Pediatric Medical Associates at 2053 Bellmore Ave., just south of Oak Street, at around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 25, according to Sgt. Stephen Fitzgerald.

The SUV, described as a dark-colored Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon with possible front-end damage, sped northbound on Bellmore Avenue after striking the man, police said. The pedestrian suffered injuries to his face, head and back, and was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in a Bellmore Fire Department ambulance, where he was listed in stable condition, according to police. Neither the police nor the hospital identified the injured man.

Police had not identified the driver by press time. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. Callers' identities are kept confidential.
