Sachs indicted on attempted murder charge

Posted

A Nassau County grand jury this morning indicted Evan Sachs, of Merrick, on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly stabbing an 8-year-old five times in the back.

If convicted, Sachs faces up to 25 years in prison.

Sachs, 23, was arrested on Oct. 8 after police allege that he stabbed the boy at a Dave and Busters Restaurant in Westbury. The victim sustained a punctured lung, but at the time he was expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

The grand jury added the second-degree assault charge, which Sachs was not originally charged with.

According to the indictment, the grand jury accused Sachs of committing the crime with the intention of causing death to the victim.

Sachs, a 2005 graduate of Calhoun High School, had been on several medications at the time of the incident, and had recently undergone a change in medication prior to the night of Oct. 8, according to his attorney, Eric Sachs.

An explanation has yet to be given as to why Evan Sachs allegedly chose to attack the victim. Police said at the time that Sachs was targeting a young boy, but that the victim was chosen at random.
