Students in the Bellmore School District recently had the chance to work with a local high school teacher to further their understanding of the sciences.

Fourth-graders in Lauren McHale’s fourth-grade class at Winthrop Avenue Elementary School welcomed Mepham High School chemistry teacher Lee Mattes for a special presentation on Nov. 7. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District educator discussed the differences between physical and chemical changes in matter.

Mattes, whose daughter Ruby is in the class, showcased a physical reaction by pouring rubbing alcohol and acetone on a tile to show the difference in evaporation times.

Mattes then put alcohol into a coffee can and shook it well. He had a lit candle on a meter stick, and he brought the candle to the can, which caused the cover to pop off.

“He was able to demonstrate the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter for the students to understand,” McHale said. “This will help us as we move forward with our lesson.”

Mattes also discussed indicators with the students. He stressed that labeling beakers and vials is vital to ensuring safety in a laboratory, as is wearing protective goggles.
