School districts to hold budget meetings

Posted

Administrators in the Bellmore and North Bellmore school districts are asking residents to attend upcoming budget workshops.

The North Bellmore School District, which takes in students from North Bellmore and part of North Merrick in four schools, will hold a hearing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at the Newbridge Road School. Mark Schissler, assistant superintendent for business, will explain and review a draft of the district’s proposed spending plan.

Bellmore Assistant Superintendent for Business and Technology Services Deirdre Gambino will do the same for her district’s draft budget over three meetings in March. Bellmore comprises three schools.

The workshops, which will all be held at the Winthrop Avenue School, will take place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 10, 7:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 17, 7:45 p.m.

Last May, Bellmore voters passed a $33.2 million spending plan that included a 1.5 percent increase in the district’s tax levy –– the total amount that the district needs to raise in property taxes to meet expenses –– for the 2014-15 academic year. In North Bellmore, voters approved a $52.3 million spending plan, with a 1.75 percent tax-levy increase.
