Thousands come to Nassau College site for safety

The Red Cross set up shelters throughout Nassau for those needing refuge from the storm.

This dance studio at Nassau Community College was converted on Saturday by the Red Cross to handle more evacuees.

The Red Cross shelter at Nassau Community College was one of many throughout the county filling up with people displaced due to the hurricane.

The upstairs gym at the Red Cross shelter at Nassau Community College was packed with evacuees by Saturday afternoon.

Thousands of people fled to the shelter that Nassau County and the Nassau County Red Cross set up for residents evacuated from the South Shore. These photos were taken late Saturday afternoon in the upstairs and downstairs gyms. More people were placed in a dance studio being prepared for them.
