The Bellmores mark Veterans Day

Posted

The Bellmores marked Veterans Day with two ceremonies on Nov. 11. Members of American Legion Post No. 948 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2770 held the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park off Bedford Avenue in Bellmore Village. North Bellmore American Legion Post No. 1749 hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the monument in front of Newbridge Road Elementary School.

Veterans and community members alike gathered at both services to pay their respects to those serving in the military, past and present. Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops also joined in the ceremonies

Veterans Day was first celebrated as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, as a way to remember the end of Word War I. (Hostilities in what was then the world’s largest armed conflict ceased on Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.) President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day. In 1953, the celebration was renamed Veterans Day to recognize the sacrifices of all members of U.S. armed forces.
