A chilly spring morning couldn't deter more than 50 teams from across Long Island from attending Mepham High School's Fourth Annual Paul Limmer Pirate Track and Field Invitational recently. The event, which was initially started to showcase Mepham's then new track, has become an annual friendly meet to raise money for Mepham's track and field team at the beginning of the season.

Mepham head coach Dave Frazer said the meet was a great success, with about 2,700 athletes competing. Frazer said that an emphasis is placed on instruction and allowing younger athletes to gain a feel for large meets and competitions. "It's a great early season meet where kids can learn about the events," Frazer said.

All three Bellmore-Merrick high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– were present, and Frazer said that he was grateful to the entire Mepham community, from parents to administrators, for helping to organize the meet. Parents helped to run the concession stands and sell T-shirts for the event; all proceeds went to the Mepham track and field team to help purchase needed equipment.

Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville placed first for the boys, and North Shore in Sea Cliff placed first for the girls. The Mepham boys placed sixth overall.
