Winter wallops Bellmore-Merrick yet again

Posted

A fast-moving, overnight storm dumped another 10 to 12 inches of snow on Bellmore-Merrick, on top of the half-foot already on the ground, shutting down schools throughout the area and sending snowplows onto local streets yet again.

As of Thursday afternoon, local streets had been plowed, but their condition ranged from clear to semi-clear, depending on the size of the road. Major thoroughfares were passable, though many parts of Merrick Road and Bellmore Avenue were reduced to single lanes, and many side streets were still coated with thin layers of snow and ice.

Though griping about a winter that has thus far provided little relief, Bellmore-Merrick residents seemed to take the storm in stride, digging out their driveways and dusting off their cars. Kids enjoyed the day off by sledding and engaging in snowball fights.

Weather prognosticators were predicting a few more inches for Friday and Saturday, but nothing major.
