Bronx man allegedly scammed E.M. senior citizen

A Bronx man was charged in connection with a local larceny, officials said, explaining that he scammed an elderly East Meadowite.

First Squad detectives arrested Jeremy E. McFadden, 23, last Wednesday. Public information officers of the Nassau County Police Department said that he was behind a telephone scam in the fall.

On Oct. 20, 2015, police said McFadden called an 86-year-old East Meadow man, pretending to be the senior citizen’s grandson. He said he had been arrested and needed $7,500 to be released, they added.

According to detectives, McFadden gave the victim an account number located at the Bank of America to deposit the money. The East Meadowite complied, officials said, but later found out that the caller was not his grandson.

A subsequent investigation by detectives led to McFadden’s arrest last week. He was charged with third-degree grand larceny at his arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead last Thursday.

County Executive Ed Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter urge citizens to be vigilant when receiving calls, including telephone solicitations or emails from people identifying themselves as employees of the Internal Revenue Service. In these cases, they explained, scammers contact residents and claim that they are federal employees and that the individual they called owes money; these victims are told they can avoid arrest, foreclosure or suspension/termination of services if they make a payment.

If you believe you may have been a victim of any of telephone scam, Mangano said, call 911 immediately. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of individuals responsible are asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS (8477). All calls will remain anonymous.
