Adopted Navy commander meets students at Clarke Middle School

Posted

Students in Jill Artus's Health classes at W.T. Clarke Middle School adopted a United States Navy Commander, Peter N. Lawless who is a personal friend of Mr. and Mrs. Artus.

Each month the students created a project to send to Commander Lawless in Baghdad, Iraq, where he was stationed.  The students wrote letters, created class puzzles, and sent Valentine and St. Patrick's Day cards.  The students also made "Welcome Home" signs that were displayed in his home when he returned on May 11.

Commander Lawless visited the students on May 18. He provided a slide show of his time spent in Iraq and brought "show and tell" items such as a piece of a T-Wall and two decorated coins given to him by General Ann Dunwoody. Lawless personally thanked the students for all of the letters.

"The coolest thing in the world is to get a package [while in Iraq]," he said. The visit concluded with a question and answer session with the students.
