Heavy smoke was surging from the house at 355 Chestnut Ave. when East Meadow firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

A male homeowner informed the volunteers that fire had engulfed the kitchen, said Chief James Kane. Debris inside the home caused the flames to spread to the second floor, "Which honestly slowed down our operation a bit," Kane said.

A coordinated effort from about 100 firefighters, also from Levittown, North Bellmore, North Merrick, Wantagh and Westbury fire departments, said Kane, took 30 minutes to control the blaze.

"It was a nice job by everyone, as always," Kane said.

The house did sustain severe damage, Kane noted, and two firefighters, as well as the homeowner, were treated for minor injuries and released on the scene. The cause of the fire has been turned over to the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office.
