Bowling Green students send love to veterans

In honor of the season of love, Bowling Green Elementary School students created more than 700 Valentine’s Day cards for veterans.

East Meadow School District officials said the children crafted personalized cards in advance of the holiday, expressing their appreciation and gratitude for those who have served in the United States armed forces. Impressed by the number of cards, they added, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano offered to send their messages and designs to veterans this Valentine’s Day.

In addition to facilitating the card delivery, Mangano hosted a wedding vow renewal ceremony for county residents on Feb. 11, which is held biannually at the Coral House in Baldwin. More than Nassau 500 couples turned out for the celebration, and Mangano welcomed them to the event with a festive joke.

“Many have told me that marriage is like a deck of cards,” he said. “At the beginning, all you need is a heart and a diamond. After many years, all you want is a spade or a club.”
