'Burn the Floor' cast takes a break in Malverne

Dancers share some 'down time' at producer's home

Even energetic, gorgeous, talented and sexy people have to rest sometime — and that's just what the cast of Broadway’s “Burn the Floor” did recently at the Malverne home of two of their producers, Tom and Maria Angelica Benigno.
“The show is something like you’ve never seen before,” said Tom Benigno. “These are some of the nicest kids around, and when they get on the stage ... they are transformed ... it’s magic!”
When the show, billed as “a breathtaking blend of Latin and Ballroom dance” opened in August, it broke records on the second week at the Longacre Theatre in New York City. “I had seen it in San Francisco, one of eight or nine times that I’ve seen the show, and they had double curtain calls every night,” said Benigno
“Burn the Floor” was created by Harley Metcalf, and is directed and choreographed by Jason Gilkison, former World Champion Latin and Ballroom dancer, and guest choreographer on the fourth season of “So You Think You Can Dance.”
The cast is made up of champion ballroom dancers from around the world, mostly young people in their twenties. They include 18 award-winning international dancers from from around the globe who collectively hold more than 100 dance titles. There are also two vocalists.

“I had this cast party at my house because I have grown very fond of these great kids, and they needed a well-deserved break," said Benigno. "They pour their hearts out on stage every night.”
While at the Benignos, the performers did what they the rest of us do to relax: the swam in the heated pool, ate barbecue food, reclined on chaise lounges and played “Beatles Rock Band.”
“Burn the Floor” will run its limited performances at the Longacre Theatre through January 10, 2010.
