Celebrating 150 years in the community

The history of the East Meadow United Methodist Church dates back to the early days of the community. According to historical documents, prayer groups met as early as the end of the Revolutionary War. The church was officially incorporated in 1859. One hundred and fifty years later, members of the East Meadow United Methodist Church celebrated a landmark anniversary.

The celebration, held on Sept. 20, began with a special morning service and culminated with an afternoon dinner party at the Coral House in Baldwin.

While the church is housed on a property different from the original building, members can get a taste of its history by simply looking across the street, on East Meadow Avenue. The original structure still stands today, and now houses the Open Hand of God Church. Right behind it, is a cemetery, which is still owned by the United Methodist Church.

A dedicated membership furthered the church’s mission through the decades, through good times and bad. Worshippers continue the traditions of the past and expand upon the recent ones. Coming soon, the East Meadow United Methodist Church will host its annual Fall Fair (in November) and the symbolic lighting of the Christmas Tree.

Pastor Rev. Cedric Johnson, who replaced Rev. Lynda Betes-Stepe in 2008, sees a bright future ahead for the church, despite tough economic times nationally and locally.

“We have a lot to build on,” Johnson said. “Because of that strong foundation that has already been in place for so many years.”

“They are truly a community church,” said Councilman Gary Hudes.“Their members belong to many other organizations within the East Meadow community that work to make this a better community each and every day. I congratulate them on 150 years of faith, love of God and commitment to the community.”
