Chaos on Meadowbrook injures eight

The East Meadow Fire Department responded to four separate car collisions within a 500-mile stretch on the Meadowbrook State Parkway on Feb. 10, just before midnight.

Within minutes of receiving a call alerting them of the accident, First Assistant Chief Phillip, Second Assistant Chief Eric Becker, and Third Assistant Chief James Walsh were en-route. They would soon be followed by EMFD's Fire and Rescue companies.

The original accident in the North Bound lane was an overturned vehicle, in which a Nassau County Ambulance and State Police were in the process of handling, along with the Merrick Fire Department.

Meanwhile, In the South Bound lanes, a Nassau County Police ambulance that responded to the first accident was then struck by two oncoming vehicles prompting a rush to those motorists.

Minutes later, Fire and EMS members were divided to respond to a car that crashed into the woods, again on the South Bound lanes just south of the first two accidents. This accident prompted a request for mutual aid from the Uniondale Fire Department.

Just minutes after the third accident, a fourth accident occurred on the northbound side in the stopped traffic approximately 500 feet south of the first two accidents. East Meadow personnel rendered assistance at this location.

With the combined efforts of the East Meadow Fire Department, Merrick Fire Department, Nassau County Police Ambulance Bureau, and New York State Police, order was restored with no further incident.

The scene was cleared in 45 minutes and eight people were transported to area hospitals. No injuries were know to be life threatening.
