Clarke success based on balance

Clarke is quickly proving that age really is nothing more than a number, specifically on the soccer field.

The Lady Rams, whose roster boasts just a single senior, have run out to a 5-0-2 start (3-0-2 in Conference A-II) compliments of a well-rounded offense and an aggressive defense. Nipping at the heels of first place Island Trees —Clarke was just one point behind and handed the Lady Bulldogs their only loss heading into this week’s action —they were also fighting off Wantagh and West Hempstead, each of whom was just three points back of second.

“It’s all because of the offense and defense,” Clarke coach Becky Wachsberger said of the fast start that has been more about team play than any individual. “Every girl on the team is a soccer player and an athlete.”

In a 6-0 non-league win over Valley Stream North last Saturday, five different Clarke players scored led by freshman forward Abby Trotter, who had a pair. Freshman forward Hope Quinonez, sophomore midfielder Sam Goodwin, freshman midfielder Nicole Russell and eighth-grade midfielder Jennifer Wahlig also netted goals in the win. “We kept possession of the ball and the girls connected,” Wachsberger said, noting the contributions of its freshman class that includes three girls that saw extensive action last season. “Now they’ve settled down, gotten bigger and keep up with the [older opponents]. I’m so impressed.”

Trotter and Quinonez have been strong finishers, and the playmaking midfielders have certainly helped generate scoring opportunities. Along with Goodwin, Russell and Wahlig, sophomore Dina Simonian has also played a role in both the transition game and setting up her teammates. “The difference between us and other teams is possession of the ball,” Wachsberger said, noting that smart decision-making is a key factor in the offense.

Oddly enough, for all of the goals scored by the Lady Rams, Wachsberger, herself a former keeper, preaches defense first. And the team employs a flat back scheme rather than the standard defensive alignment that includes a stopper and sweeper.
