Nassau County police said on Thursday afternoon that an alleged victim of a mugging in East Meadow has retracted her story.

Police had said that a 46-year-old woman recanted her report that a subject attacked her and robbed her of purse on Wednesday night at 11:40 p.m. in the parking lot of Pathmark on 1897 Front Street.

She told police that as she exited her automobile, the so-called attacker struck the left side of her face with a glass bottle, then grabbed her pocketbook and fled the scene by foot, detectives said. The woman then drove herself to a local hospital where she called police and was treated for her injuries, police said in the initial report.

A description of the supposed purse-snatcher was not available, and police originally reported that money and personal papers were stolen.

As of early Thursday afternoon, a Nassau police spokeswoman could not confirm if all or parts of the victim’s story were false. She said the investigation is continuing.

“We don’t have further details,” the spokeswoman said. “We don’t know which part of the story is not true. It is an ongoing investigation.”
