E-cycling, S.T.O.P. drives are coming up

Residents looking to get rid of old electronics or household chemicals will be able to do so this month through two programs hosted by the Town of Hempstead.

The town will host an E-cycling drive on Saturday, March 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Parking Field L2, on Division Avenue in Levittown (behind the Tri-County Flea Market). Electronics such as computers, televisions, VCRs and DVD players, and other items will be accepted. Pharmaceutical disposal and paper record shredding services will also be available.

The next Stop Throwing Out Pollutants program will be held on Saturday, March 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eisenhower Park in Parking Field 3, off of Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. This program is designed to provide residents with a safe, environmentally sound method of disposal of the many hazardous materials found in the average home. Toxins such as antifreeze, drain cleaners and pesticides are accepted.

While supplies last, residents can bring their old incandescent light bulbs to the S.T.O.P. event and exchange them for up to five energy efficient bulbs. Residents can also bring old thermostats containing mercury and receive a $5 gift card to a local home center, courtesy of Covanta Energy.

These programs are limited to Town of Hempstead residents, and no business or commercial vehicles are accepted. For more information, call the Sanitation Department at (516) 378-4210.
