Volunteers serve senior citizens for holiday

The East Meadow Kiwanis Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Luncheon was held for the 30th time last Sunday at East Meadow High School.

More than 500 senior citizens from the community enjoyed a complete turkey dinner, as well as an afternoon of entertainment provided by the East Meadow High School Jazz Ensemble.

The event gives seniors the chance to enjoy a meal at no charge while socializing with friends and acquaintances.

Led by Thanksgiving Dinner Committee Co-Chairmen Mitchell Allen and Mitchell Skoller, preparation began as early as 7:30 a.m., with Kiwanians actively working in the kitchen.

As seniors began to arrive at about 10:30 a.m., student volunteers helped them to their seats, and served them throughout the afternoon.

Funds raised by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club to finance the event are supplemented with contributions of food and supplies from assisting student organizations and several local businesses, including TD Bank, The Bristal, Entenmann’s, First National Bank of Long Island, OCLI, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, FANS, The Long Island Muslim Society and Beverage Barn of East Meadow.

Student clubs included the Nassau Community College Circle K, the Key Clubs of East Meadow, Clarke and Sacred Heart High Schools, the Builders Clubs of Clarke and Woodland Middle School, the K-Kids of Bowling Green Elementary School, and the EMHS Future Business Leaders of America club.
