East Meadow High School's valedictorian and salutatorian

Valedictorian Amrita Balgobind
   
Amrita Balgobind is this year’s Valedictorian of East Meadow High School. She is a young lady who enjoys the simple things in life like reading, watching television and spending time with family.   
   
While not doing these activities in her free time, Balgobind spent a prestigious four years at EMHS and was involved in many clubs and activities. She was the vice president of the Science Honor Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Spanish Honor Society. She was involved in the Pre-med Club, the Environmental Club, and Key Club. She was also on the math team.               

   
Balgobind spent her summer volunteering at Nassau University Medical Center and during the year, she volunteered at an orthodontist’s office.
   
She will be attending New York University in the fall to study biology.


Salutatorian Sahar Bilal

   
This year’s Salutatorian at East Meadow High School is Sahar Bilal. 
   
Bilal was involved in many activities at EMHS including the Jet Gazette, where she became Editor in Chief during her senior year. She was in the French Club, the Environmental Club, and Key Club. She was in the String Ensemble and Hand Bell Choir and performed with the American Symphony Orchestra as well as the Hofstra University Orchestra. 
   
Bilal was on the math team and competed in the American Math Competition. She was also in the Science Olympiads, the Long Island Science Congress, the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science and Society Essay Competition and the DuPont Challenge.         
   
Bilal was a member of the Science Honor Society, the French Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. She was given many awards including the National Merit Scholarship, the Anna Grause Memorial Scholarship, the Herald’s Excellence in Journalism Award, and more.
   
She volunteered at the East Meadow Public Library and the CUNY Law School. Bilal also assisted in breast cancer research at Columbia University Medical Center and received “The Conquest of Cancer and the Next Generation of Cancer Researchers” from the American Association of Cancer Research.
  
Bilal will be attending Stony Brook University where she is in the Women and Science and Engineering Program. She will be pursuing a major in biology and is considering a major or minor related to English.
