"It has been said, ‘time heals all wounds.’ I do not agree,” once said Rose Kennedy, mother to President John F. Kennedy. “The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.”

East Meadowites came out to Veterans Memorial Park on Sept. 11 to remember the men and women who died during the attacks on the World Trade Center and while less tears were shed than in years passed, the solemn ceremony reflected on the loss still felt by the community.

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts held candles and bowed their heads in honor of those lost, but were too young to remember. Meanwhile, parents, community organization members and the East Meadow Fire Department were deep in memory as they silently marked an anniversary of a day they will never forget.

Supporting one another and taking a few moments to reflect on those who willingly endangered their lives for strangers once again brought neighbors together.

A candlelit moment of silence marked the night following prayers by local religious leaders and encouraging words by government officials.
