Five positions are up for grabs, three races are contested

Five positions are up for grabs in this year's East Meadow Board of Education trustee election, to take place on May 18 when the public also votes on the school budget proposal. The deadline to file for candidacy was on Monday night.

Three of the open seats are for three-year terms, while the others are for one-year stints.

Of the contested races, Abby Rothschild-Kaplan, who was elected to her first term in 2007, is vying for another three-year term. She is being challenged by Jeffrey Rosenking.

Steven Jacobs, who was also elected to a three-year term in 2007, is running for a one-year seat. He will be opposed by Corey Fanelli, who graduated from W.T. Clarke High School in 2008 and currently attends St. John's University. Jacobs and Fanelli are vying for the position that was vacated by Diana DeVito last June. Joseph Parisi was appointed to fill in the seat until the election. The winner of the Jacobs and Fanelli race is to be sworn in immediately following the election.

The final contested race is between Joseph Danenza and former school board trustee Robert Kushner. Danenza had an unsuccessful bid for a one-year term last year, while Kushner last served in 1994. The seat was not filled after it was vacated by Al Semonella in October. That winner will also be sworn in on Election Night.

Parisi and Marcee Rubinstein are unopposed in their races for three-year seats.

Ballot positioning was to be determined on Tuesday night, after Herald press time.
