East Meadow Kiwanis club members assembled and delivered holiday food baskets for 118 local families last week.

Kiwanians, high school Key Clubbers and Builders Club members from Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools collected money and food donations, and on Friday, Dec. 16, organized the produce into baskets. Other members joined the project on Saturday, Dec. 17, and personally delivered a basket to each family.

Holiday Food Drive Chairperson Jay Steinmetz and Holiday Food Basket Chairperson Alan Hodish lead the effort and provided needy families with a complete meal at no charge for their Hanukkah or Christmas celebration.

The food basket recipients were also invited to a free Christmas feast at Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant where Kiwanis members will help treat those in need to a warm meal and toys for the tots.

Walter F. Wietge, Jr. made a monetary donation in memory of Howard M. Clemmings, and Capital One Bank and First National Bank of Long Island also contributed to the cause.
