EMFD commissioners remind residents that fireworks are illegal and dangerous ahead of July 4

Each Fourth of July, thousands of people — often children and teens — are injured while using fireworks. And while they are illegal in New York, few people understand fireworks’ dangers and associated risks—severe burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 19,000 fires are reported in the U.S. on July 4 than on any other day of the year. Injuries from fireworks account for approximately 9,000 hospital emergency room visits, the most severe of which are caused by powerful fireworks such as M-80s, rockets, and cherry bombs.

“Injuries and fires caused by fireworks are preventable and best left in the hands of professionals,” Commissioner Carey Welt said. “Public fireworks’ displays produced by professional pyrotechnic companies are the best and safest way to celebrate America’s independence.”
