The East Meadow High School class of 2015 is preparing to take on the next chapter in their lives — college. The Herald recently met with two of those students, Samuel Berger and Alexandria Melito, who will both attend SUNY Geneseo in the fall, to talk about how they feel weeks before they begin their collegiate careers. Both students said they will miss their everyday routines in East Meadow, but are excited to see what the future has in store.

Berger, 18, plans to major in business with a concentration in marketing and communications. Melito, 17, will study psychology and said she couldn’t be more excited for college.

Both shared the idea that many students believe: college is where they’ll fit in. Classes will be enjoyable because they get to focus on learning about their primary interests in greater depth, while surrounded by students on their academic level.

Though Berger and Melito said entering a new school with different faces can be intimidating, both exuded a positive outlook and plan to make friends when given the opportunity — they intend to spend time at the Nassau Hall residence dorm, specifically designed for freshman and a hot spot on campus. Indeed, Berger and Melito will each share a class together, and expressed their happiness to see at least one familiar face.

Another common anxiety about freshman year is meeting your roommate for the first time. Berger said living with a stranger will be an adjustment at first, but he’s excited to make a new friend. Melito is currently engrossed in the process of packing, and said she can’t wait to live with her roommate and design the dorm room. “I met her at orientation and she seems really nice,” said Melito. “I think we’re going to be really close friends.”

The two students expressed a desire to join clubs at Geneseo. Melito, who was one of East Meadow High’s kickline stars who knew how to “rock-ette!” said she plans to join Knightline, Geneseo’s kickline and dance team, to stay intact with her dance background. She also wants to join the psychology club to make friends who share the same major.
