Heavy rainfall backed up traffic on July 30

When the state Department of Transportation finished repaving Hempstead Turnpike last month, a department spokeswoman said that workers would return in the spring to complete drainage repairs.
The need for that work was evidenced last Thursday, when heavy, late-afternoon rainfall inundated the street near its intersection with Carman Avenue, backing up traffic.
