Boys who grow up playing sports often dream about taking their skills to the professional level, but only a select few play in college and even less are talented enough to compete beyond those four years. However, East Meadow resident Rich Ohrnberger smashed those statistics as he took his athleticism to the next level playing offensive lineman for Penn State Nittany Lions followed by the New England Patriots.

After playing under Coach Vincent Mascia at East Meadow High School, Ohrnberger earned a full scholarship to Penn State where he excelled on and off the field, and helped lead the team to four bowl games, playing in three. However, Ohrnberger said he never expected to be drafted to the NFL.

During a short trip home, Ohrnberger was watching the 2009 NFL draft surrounded by friends and family when suddenly, the phone rang. Bill Belichick, head coach of the Patriots, and Robert Kraft, the owner, were on the other line asking Ohrnberger to join them in Massachusetts.

“I was drafted in the fourth round, which was a shock,” Ohrnberger remembered. “I didn’t expect it at all. I was barely mentioned as a draftable prospect, so it was a huge surprise, a great day.”

His time with the Patriots ended in February, but now Ohrnberger has another chance to shine – with the New York Giants.

In early May he headed to the Giants’ rookie minicamp and showed up to impress as the players ran basic football and team drills for Offensive Line Coach Pat Flaherty.

“At this point, if they make room on their roster . . . and they need an offensive lineman, they’ll hopefully be looking to me first,” said Ohrnberger. He added that Flaherty noted, “I’m going to try to get you over here,” and was informed he’s on the “short list.”

Now, he waits.

“It’s a lot of uncertainty,” Ohrnberger admitted, “but the opportunity to continue to play in this league – it’s what I want to do.”
