School for students with autism promotes exercise, fitness

The Genesis School, for students with autism between the ages of 5 and 21, celebrated National Running Day on June 4 in East Meadow to promote exercise and physical fitness.

The school, located in St. Raphael’s Parish on Newbridge Road, is an extension of Eden II, a Staten Island-based nonprofit organization that provides schooling, adult programs and services to families dealing with autism.

National Running Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in June, is a day when runners nationwide declare their passion for running.

According to Genesis, many children and adults with autism have unusual dietary patterns and behavioral issues related to food selectivity. Because individuals with autism may demonstrate problem behaviors, they have restricted access to opportunities for physical activity.

To change that trend, students, with the assistance of direct support professionals and Genesis staff, spent last Wednesday afternoon outside parish grounds running and walking under the sun.
