Girl Scout leaders honored for service, commitment

Joy Geist was recognized for 50 years

East Meadow resident Joy Geist, among other local women, was recognized for her decades of dedication and service to Girl Scouts of Nassau County East Meadow Association at the 20th Annual Adult Recognition Awards Ceremony on March 18.

“My daughter wanted to be a Brownie, but there was no leadership,” recalled Geist. “We didn’t want to go home to face our daughters and tell them they couldn’t be in Girl Scouts.” So in 1961, along with a neighbor, Geist took a course, became the Girl Scout Leader for Nancy’s troop and continued her involvement even after her daughter graduated from the organization with the highest honors.

Throughout the years, Geist has held a number of positions in the East Meadow Girl Scouts Association, taking on roles like organizer, delegate, chairman, service team member, treasurer and is currently the family campaign chair who asks parents for contributions to fundraise.

“It’s a good group,” said Geist. “I enjoy working with the girls and the community.”

Geist was awarded for 50 years of involvement and received tenure and appreciation pins. Joined by family and friends, Geist was also surprised when former Girl Scouts showed up to congratulate the longtime leader.

In addition to Geist, many East Meadow women were honored with tenure, appreciation and service pins.
