East Meadow Girl Scouts attended a special mass and awards ceremony at St. Raphael’s Church last Sunday.

Five scouts from Troop 1061 were awarded the Ave Maria Medal and one scout from Troop 1061 and one scout from Troop 1081 were each honored with the Family of God Medal.

Father Cyril was on hand to pass out the awards with Scout Leader Joanne Surless and presented a special blessing upon the girls. “Bless these young girls on this the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting,” he said. “Allow their minds to be broadened, their hopes to be raised and their future filled with promise as they grow in knowledge and wisdom.”

Thirteen East Meadow Association Girl Scout Troops and independents attended the mass. Each girl earned a special patch and certificate that was distributed by leaders after the ceremony.

The troops also took a moment to recognize March 11 to 17 as Girl Scout week and celebrated the 100th anniversary of the organization.

Girl Scouts was started by Juliette Lowe to help girls build courage, confidence and character.
