Gary Hudes's acceptance speech last week also marked his 10th anniversary in government.

Ironically, the local business leader never envisioned a future in government, until he was asked to serve a decade ago.

During the Town of Hempstead's induction ceremony on Jan. 5, Hudes discussed his focus on delivering personal service to his constituents. His background in customer service is extensive, as owner and president of Gennaro Jewelers in Bellmore, and
as a former Chamber of Commerce president.

While outlining his achievements, Hudes touted his "crusade" against graffiti, recycling initiatives, and personal visits to resident's homes.

"I have delivered what I have promised, and our residents — our customers — responded with their support on Election Day," Hudes said.

Hudes, a Levittown resident received 74 percent of the vote in defeating Democratic challenger Matthew Hynes, also of Levittown.

He also thanked his staff, led by Chief of Staff Robin Karp and his colleagues on the Town Council.

Hudes alluded to the example of Charles Plumb, a retired navy pilot who was shot down and parachuted into enemy territory. After spending six years as a prisoner of war, Plumb went on a speaking tour to talk about his experiences, Hudes said. The retired pilot was approached by a man in a restaurant, who said he packed his parachute on that fateful day years earlier, Hudes said.

"During his speeches, Charles Plumb asks his audiences 'Who packs your parachutes?" Hudes said. "Who helps you through your life?"

He proceeded to thank his wife of 31 years, Sheree, and his children, Jason, Jenna, Jessica and Lynn.
