In 15th Assembly District, give Montesano a full term

Who says you can’t make an impact in the Assembly minority? Michael Montesano has proven, so far, that he can.

In the eight months he has been in office, the Republican assemblyman has authored four bills that were passed by the Democratic-heavy Assembly as well as the Senate. That the bills’ effects were felt in certain communities in Montesano’s district reflects the fact that constituents can benefit from representatives even if they aren’t in the majority.

Montesano brings a diverse range of experience to the Legislature. His trade is law, but he has experience in law enforcement, education and business as well. All are helpful for a lawmaker who has to deal with the alarming issues bedeviling the state.

As a former school board member, Montesano participated in the budget process from the inside. He said that a cap on property tax increases is possible as long as the state stops imposing expensive unfunded mandates on school districts.

Montesano has it in for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He pushed for an independent audit of the financially strapped agency. In a district that includes a key Long Island Rail Road hub in Hicksville and areas like East Meadow that are without one, it is crucial to have someone who will stand up for constituents and work to end the increased fees and taxes created for the MTA.

No matter what the issue is, local or statewide, Montesano had shown that he wants his voice heard, whether it’s on the Assembly floor or by way of a media advisory or a press conference. The Herald wants to see what he can do during a full two-year term. Montesano has our endorsement.

His challenger, Leon Hart, is certainly a worthy candidate. He is enthusiastic about public service and has a firm grasp on the issues. Hart is as angry as any other taxpayer, commuter or homeowner who has to deal with the high cost of living. We hope he serves the community in some capacity and continues to stay involved. But Montesano is our choice.
