Ask Mark Epstein what stands out about his new East Rockaway jewelry store, and he will answer, “We can offer the smallest prices possible.” His background and his long-standing family business allow this to happen. And, his love of the Five Towns community, which he has been a part of since 1960, has been the impetus of this venture.

Located at 36 West 47th Street in Manhattan’s jewelry district, Epstein & Son is a jewelry manufacturer and importer. Mark Epstein, who has been in the jewelry industry for 28 years, is the third generation. His grandfather founded the business in 1940, and his father joined after World War II. Manufacturing is done domestically, and they import from overseas.

Since so many of his customers are Long Island residents, Epstein wanted to give them a more accessible place to shop. Joining him in the planning and executing of the store is Randy Burken. As a teacher in the Five Towns area with a sales background, who also lives in East Rockaway, she knows the community well.
Island Gold Fine Jewelry has a welcoming atmosphere, chicly designed in beige, gold and teal. The milieu is casual, far from intimidating. They are aiming for the feel of a mom-and-pop, neighborhood jeweler.

Whether you’re looking for the mate of an orphan earring, or for a solitaire diamond engagement ring set in platinum, Island Gold can provide the choices, order it if it’s not in stock, or design and create it from scratch. They do repairs, polishing and cleaning. They buy gold as well, offering the highest price possible. If a piece has stones, they will remove them first to get an accurate weight of the gold. Island Gold also buys and sells estate jewelry.

Bring in a piece of jewelry you no longer wear, or an heirloom you’d like to remodel while keeping the stones, and Epstein can come up with outstanding ideas. For example, a tennis bracelet could be transformed into diamond hoop earrings, or Grandma’s brooch, outdated ring, or string of pearls could become a fabulous pendant or necklace. Items will be manufactured in the best way possible, using only top quality materials.

Store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Appointments are an option as well — for extra time in jewelry design, selling gold, or just choosing something special.
