Lighting the menorah

Temple Emanu-El, East Meadow Jewish Center congregants celebrate Hanukkah

Hanukkah spirit has been alive and well this week in East Meadow.

The East Meadow Jewish Center on Prospect Avenue, like many local synagogues, have maintained their usual holiday traditions, including the lighting of a menorah to commemorate each night of the Festival of Lights.

Jewish Center officials, led by Rabbi Ronald Androphy and President Doug Lieberman, joined by dozens of students from the temple’s Hebrew School program, braved rainy weather on Nov. 27 to light a giant menorah on the temple lawns on Hanukkah’s first night.

Hanukkah will conclude this year on Thursday evening.

Congregants at Temple Emanu-El also joined together recently to celebrate Hanukkah. On Nov. 24, the Merrick Avenue synagogue hosted a Hanukkah brunch, complete with a menorah lighting, games, music, crafts and raffles.

Members also donated frozen turkeys to Island Harvest, a Mineola-based hunger relief organization, as well as toys and other non-perishable food items to help families in need.

Rabbi Daniel-Bar Nahum, with congregant Lisa Shubin, led the festive proceedings.

Residents can still attend other local, festive celebrations, including the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and the Council of East Meadow Community Orginzations’ holiday lighting on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Prospect and East Meadow Avenues.

On Friday, The Community Association of Stewart Avenue will host its annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting at 4 p.m., next to Carvel, at the intersection of Carman Avenue and Lake Lane.
