Mzking music on a grand stage

Last summer, Dr. Mark Wiener, a lifetime Long Beach resident and principal of Martin Avenue Elementary School in North Bellmore, resumed his music studies after putting them aside for many years as he pursued his career in education. But his love of music – particularly the saxophone – never left him and now he finds himself performing in a setting beyond his wildest dreams.
Dr. Wiener, 58, who is a saxophone student with acclaimed saxophonist and composer Javier Arau, has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall with the New York Jazz Academy’s Manhattan Big Band on Sunday. The concert will feature new arrangements of classic jazz masterpieces commissioned just for this performance, including the compositions of Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Hoagy Carmichael, Tito Puente, and others.
This event, The USA-Japan Goodwill Concert, presents eight ensembles from the New York Jazz Academy, including a small jazz ensemble, and a jazz vocal chorus featuring Carolyn Leonhart. The performance will showcase 100 students of all ages, who will play along side some of New York’s top jazz pros (including members of Steely Dan’s band). Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery also performs.
The concert opens with Japanese musicians from the Kan Mass Choir, Kan Tamaru, Conductor, and the All Japan High School Wind Orchestra (various conductors) performing classical works.
The Manhattan-based New York Jazz Academy, founded by Arau, recently expanded to Long Island, opening a school in Mineola. For more information, contact www.nyjazz academy.com.
