Officers assaulted at Nassau jail, hospital

A police officer and a corrections officer were recently assaulted in East Meadow. 

On Sept. 24, a Roslyn man accused of allegedly running a ponzi adoption scheme was arrested last week after officials said he assaulted a corrections officer while in jail at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow.

According to prosecutors, Cohen has been in jail since Sept. 25, 2009, when he was charged with 69 counts related to multiple schemes to steal money from clients to whom he promised to facilitate adoptions. He was arrested last Friday. Cohen is planning to represent himself in a trial, which began on Monday.

Following his assault of a police officer, Cohen was charged with Assault in the Second Degree (a D felony) and Obstructing Governmental Administration in the second degree (an A misdemeanor).

On Oct. 4, an East Norwich man who allegedly assaulted a police officer in Oyster Bay at 5:45 a.m., attacked another officer  that morning while being brought in for a medical evaluation at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, police said.

The defendant punched and kicked the officer resulting in a head injury and blurry vision, police said. According to authorities, the officer was treated and released. The defendant has been charged with Assault 2nd Degree, in addition to his other charges from the Oyster Bay incident.

Burglary

An apartment on Hempstead Turnpike was burglarized on Oct. 1. A laptop computer and an MP3 player were reported missing. 

Robberies

- A 2009 Honda motorcycle was stolen from the backyard of a house on Bellmore Road, sometime between 10 p.m. on Sept. 30 and 9 a.m. on Oct. 1.

- A wallet containing credit cards was stolen from a shopping center on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow on Sept. 24 at about 5:45 p.m.
