Students at Parkway Elementary School had a recent visit from the members of the Wantagh Fire Department as part of the school’s fire safety program.

Ex-Captain John Licata gave the students a lecture on fire safety, with emphasis on having a home escape plan with a family meeting place. The lecture was followed by a video on practicing fire drills in the home.

At the conclusion of the assembly, the students were escorted to a “smoke house,” where they had the opportunity to participate in a simulated fire emergency. The students were taught how to either escape a burning building, or to remain safe until firefighters rescue them.

An inside look at Native American life

In September, fourth-grade students at Bowling Green Elementary School held an in-house field trip presented by instructors Maddi Cheers and Uaian Bruno from “Journeys into American Indian Territory.”

“Journeys into American Indian Territory” is an all-day curriculum-based moving museum geared specifically to fourth-grade students. The presentation began with an introductory film about what life was like for the Native Americans after the European settlers arrived, and continued with workshops on traditional games and stories, music and dance, building a wigwam and lifestyles and history of the native peoples of the Eastern Woodlands.
